BYD to supply Colombia’s biggest electric bus fleet

China / Colombia - Federico Gutierrez, the mayor of Medellin, Bogotá, Colombia has announced BYD Inc of Shenzhen, China, is the successful bidder to supply 64 electric buses for the city’s ‘Metroplús’ rapid transit system (BRT). This order will make it the largest electric bus fleet in Colombia and the second largest in Latin America. Gutierrez said proposals by four bus manufacturers had been evaluated as part of the tendering process.

Deliveries of the electric buses are to start in the second half of this year. This move to electric buses is part of Medellín’s commitment and membership of the C40 Cities programme; a network of megacities in the world committed to climate change.
