DTNA announced it has rolled out its “circular economy approach” to battery recycling, remanufacturing and repurposing of its lithium-ion CV battery packs. As part of its carbon reduction goals, the approach aims to extend the usability of its batteries and reuse rare-earth materials in the production of new products.

The company’s four other Re.Wi.Re registered vehicle scrapping facilities are in Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar, Surat and Chandigarh.

No financial details have been announced, but in the agreement, BASF will be responsible for the collection, packaging, transportation and entire recycling operation, mechanically processing the batteries into black mass** from which lithium, cobalt and nickel will be extracted and then reused in the manufacturing of new batteries.

The plant has capacity to disassemble and recycle up to 15,000 end-of-life vehicles each year: This launch follows the success of the two facilities in Jaipur and Bhubaneshwar.

This year, the Michelin Group is celebrating an important milestone in its long history of motor tyre manufacturing. In 1923, the French company developed a method for applying a new tread to old tyres, thus extending their useful life. One hundred years later, Michelin Tyre Plc commemorated the anniversary at the ‘Michelin Remix’ factory in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, where the company has been retreading truck and bus tyres since 1968.

The refurbished truck range, the ‘T Red’, is the result of Renault Trucks’ new “circular economy” strategy of repairing and reselling used vehicles and parts instead of scrapping them.

The new facility operates and complies with the standards as stated by the government’s vehicle scrapping policy - Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernization Program (V-VMP), which took effect in April 2022.

The project will establish a procedure for battery health assessment and develop methods for preparing replacement components and for disassembly and reassembly of battery packs.

This recycling facility is believed to be the first of its kind in India - it complies with the Indian government's Vehicle Scrapping Policy - Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernization Program (V-VMP), which took effect on April 1, 2022.

Scheduled to go into operation in July 2023, the plant will be able to recycle up to 15,000 metric tons of battery materials a year and is currently undergoing a series of diagnostic tests using old batteries from different manufacturers to develop and refine the operational mechanism to discharge, dismember, recycle and shred the remaining battery material.

The Used Parts Factory, a 3,000-square-metre plant situated within its Vénissieux site and close to its headquarters, will be used for dismantling end-of-life Renault Trucks vehicles.
