Cost- and size-appropriate electric buses: T&BB speaks with Gustavo Marqueta-Siibert of Mellor Bus

UKMellor Bus was just another vehicle conversion specialist before it started taking Ducato vans and installing them with electric powertrains.1 Giving them the name ‘Orion E’, Mellor launched these low-floor minibuses in 2017 for community and welfare transport applications. This initial foray into the retrofit business paved the way for ‘Sigma’, a range of battery electric integral buses designed from the ground up by Mellor. Now, according to Gustavo Marqueta-Siibert, Group Business Development Director for Mellor’s parent, WN VTech Ltd, Mellor is challenging the major European bus manufacturers in segments and applications which have thus far been neglected in the transition to electric vehicles.

Mellor’s sister companies continue to work with established business models. Treka Bus carries out conversions of Sprinters and Transits into wheelchair accessible buses. VCS turns vans and chassis into ambulances. But Mellor’s venture into the integral bus market has been aided by a more recent acquisition by the WN VTech group, engineering services firm Promech Technologies, which has supported the company in driveline integration and vehicle lightweighting.
