Mercedes-Benz announces first public order for new eCitaro bus with Toyota FC-range extender

eCitaro launch at UITP

Italy / Germany – In June, Daimler Truck AG of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Baden-Württemberg launched its Mercedes-Benz eCitaro electric bus with a Toyota fuel cell range extender*, at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Barcelona and has now announced the first public order. The Italian public transport operator, SASA, has ordered nine 18-metre-long articulated buses with a fuel cell range extender which will be used in northern Italy from the end of this year with deliveries scheduled between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.

The vehicle has a range of 350km with high passenger capacity (articulated version: 128 passengers) as bus has been designed to operate on longer routes without stopping and recharging intermittently. This is thanks to a battery capacity of up to 392kWh, powered by NMC 3 high-performance batteries, while the fuel cell serves as a hydrogen generator to extend the range.
