BrazilMarcopolo SA of Caxias do Sul, RS, reported celebrating production of 3,000 Torino city bus units at its plant in Rio de Janeiro. The Torino model used to be manufactured in Caxias do Sul, but in May 2017, Marcopolo transferred production of conventional city buses to Marcopolo Rio. Since then, the company has built more than 3,000 units of the model, of which around 500 units were exported to Angola in 2018.

The Torino, which is essentially 35 years old, has clearly lasted the test of time, says Marcopolo. The model, it says, is, in fact, the most successful city bus design in Brazil, with more than 120,000 units produced in its plants of Caxias do Sul and Rio de Janeiro, since 1983. Marcopolo adds its Rio plant now has dedicated lines for the production of city buses using the most advanced production processes, which are operated according to LEAN manufacturing principles.
