UK / EUNigel Base, commercial vehicle manager at the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) announced the European Commission recently has laid out plans to introduce the next phase the VECTO tool from 2022. Already in force for the largest trucks, the next phase of VECTO - which stands for Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool - aims to include large vans (5 – 7.5t gvw) and M3 buses (“M3” is the generic European Union term for vehicles used for the carriage of nine or more passengers, in addition to the driver, and having a maximum gross weight exceeding 5.0 tonnes).

“Right now, we do not know when they will be brought into scope of EU regulation,” said Base. “This will be a political decision. However, it is clear that the Commission is working at a pace to deliver the necessary technical provisions to make that possible. If pushed, I would guess 2022.”
