EU / Belgium - Violeta Bulc, the EU Commissioner for Transport and Vazil Hudák, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) launched the “Safer Transport Platform” at a conference in Bucharest last month. The aim is to promote safety as a key element for transport investment and to provide easy access to technical and financial advice that is seen as aiding road safety. In order to strengthen and focus existing investment activities in road safety, the EIB and European Commission (EC – the EC is the executive body of the European Union) have established a dedicated website: https://eiah.eib.org/about/initiative-safer-transport-platform.htm

Safety is still considered particularly urgent in road transport: Despite progress made in reducing fatalities over past decades, more than 25,000 people are killed and 135,000 seriously injured on European roads every year. Targeted investment is proposed as a key factor in addressing this situation.
