UK / Sweden – ‘Ecogen Hydro’ from Cold Connect Ltd of Leigh Sinton, UK is the name of a hydraulic generator powered by the engine PTO of a truck or tractor, giving constant electrical power for transport refrigeration units (TRU).

Stephan Maille, director at Cold Connect explained at the CV Show last month, Ecogen Hydro is a hydraulic drive system that can be built into any diesel powered transport refrigeration unit, converting it to a hybrid. The drive generates 3-phase electric via the PTO of the main vehicle’s engine. The environment benefits because the Ecogen Hydro results in one engine being used instead of two. By using the conventional clean diesel Euro VI or even better a CNG engine (the SG25 Ecogen model was on display at the CV Show last month on an Iveco Stralis NP 460 6x2 tractor unit) there are not only vast reductions in pollutants over the lifetime (8 years) of the vehicle but financial savings too.
