Optare Plc, the Yorkshire-based subsidiary of India’s Ashok Leyland Inc, is to supply a further 21 Metrodecker EV battery electric, zero-emission buses to First York. Delivery is scheduled for October 2019 and the buses are to be deployed on the city's park and ride services.

Measuring 11.1m in length, the double decker seats up to 99 passengers and have an operating range exceeding 150 miles on a single overnight charge. Their acquisition has been assisted through a City of York Council application for support funding of GBP3.3m from the Government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles. First York is also upgrading its charging infrastructure to cater for the additional vehicles.
