Latest electric bus from Mellor Coachcraft features front wheel drive EMoss drivetrain

UK / Netherlands – Further details of the second generation of the Orion E low floor electric bus from Mellor Coachcraft Ltd of Rochdale (part of Woodall Nicholson's bus division) states it features a front-wheel-drivetrain developed by EMOSS Mobile Systems BV of Oosterhout, The Netherlands and is powered by Li-Ion batteries. It is claimed to have a nominal 100 mile range and incorporates overnight or a 22kW rapid charging option to suit customer applications. A full recharge takes 3.5 hours. The electric motor has peak torque of 2,500Nm and the reduction gearbox delivers single-speed drive. An additional low range gear is optional where steep hill starts may be necessary. Control and management electronics are provided by Swiss specialist, Brusa.

An electric heater system is been installed by Eberspaecher in the Orion E and the company is currently developing a full HVAC unit, which is to become available as optional equipment. Orion E has undergone significant testing and homologation and meets all European requirements. Demonstrations were set to commence in May.
