RussiaGAZ Group of Nizhny Novgorod – a JSC Russian Machines subsidiary - has developed a prototype city bus (LiAZ-529267-72-30) running on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The key advantage of using LNG as a fuel is the extended range between refuelling. The vehicle is fitted with a cryogenic 375-litre fuel tank – meaning it the fuel is kept in liquid form at -160 degrees Centigrade - in the rear overhang. The tank size, which is manufactured by Zhangjiagang CIMC Sanctum Cryogenic Equipment Co (a subsidiary of China's CIMC) - guarantees an operating range of more than 300km. While some of the other components of the fuel system - receiver, evaporator, economizer - also originate from suppliers in China; other components are from other leading producers worldwide. The bus is fitted with a 285hp inline six-cylinder spark ignition engine, model YaMZ-53624, locally produced by Yaroslavl Motor Plant (YaMZ) in Yaroslavl, Russia.
