Indian bus and coach sales rise sharply (up 171%) in Q2 2021

India – Sales of intermediate-, medium- and heavy-duty buses and coaches (7.5t gvw and above) in India increased by 171.2% in the second quarter (Q2: July to September) of fiscal year 2021-22, registering 1,730 units compared with just 638 units in Q2 of FY 2020-21. Correspondingly, total bus and coach production also increased in the second quarter of FY 2020-21 by 65.2% to 2,392 units, up from 1,448. Total exports increased by 36.2% in Q2 of FY 2021-22 recording 1,239 units compared with exports of 910 units in Q2 of FY 2020-21.

Turning to the individual segments, sales of intermediate-duty vehicles (ICV: 7.5 tonnes - 12 tonnes) rose sharply by 207.7% from 310 units in Q2 of FY 2020-21 to 954 units in same quarter for FY 2021-22 with Tata Motors recording over 40% of sales. Export sales also rallied during the quarter, up by 57.4% at 757 units further boosting ICV output during the period by 125.6% to register 1,478 units in Q2 FY 2021-22 against 655 units previously.
