New Delhi – The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India (Morth), which is based in India’s capital of New Delhi, has introduced draft legislation under the AIS 113a body code to allow rigid vehicles and tractor-trailer combinations to have up to a maximum of three decks for the carriage of two-wheelers (motorbikes) in India; currently, only two decks are permitted. The modification is expected to be passed into law later this year.

However, the body design will not be permitted to extend or project over the driver's cabin. This proposed change, states Morth, is being proposed after undertaking extensive tests on the static stability and dynamic stability of three deck vehicles; the build height is to be to the current maximum height of 4.52 metres. The change is expected to increase vehicle carriage capacity of two-wheelers by upwards of 40%.
