Volvo electric trucks to feature improved grip on slippery roads

SwedenVolvo Trucks Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden has launched a new patented safety feature for its electric trucks which reportedly provides significant improvements to stability, acceleration and braking on slippery roads.

The manufacturer’s ‘Active Grip Control’ technology harnesses the fast response of the electric motor, along with other actuators, to control the force generated between the wheels and the road in order to proactively prevent wheel spin. Sensors installed in the vehicle will notice if the truck starts to skid and will communicate to the control system to apply grip control. Volvo claims the function can be used for controlled regenerative braking – converting kinetic energy into electrical energy stored in the battery – without engaging the anti-lock braking system (ABS), thus increasing the vehicle’s energy efficiency.
