UK Highway Code puts increased responsibility on HGV drivers

UK – Changes to the UK’s Highway Code, the rules and regulations that govern UK road use, have increased the responsibility placed on drivers of larger vehicles to protect more vulnerable road users. The rule change was largely aimed at improving the safety of cyclists and pedestrians at turnings and roundabouts.

Effective January 29th 2022, the new rules modified the hierarchy of road users, stating that “those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others. This principle applies most strongly to drivers of large goods and passenger vehicles, vans/minibuses, cars/taxis and motorcycles.”
