Volvo trucks to employ fossil-free steel

By Bradley Osborne - 25th June 2022

SwedenVolvo Trucks Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden has announced that it will be introducing fossil-free steel, supplied by steelmaker SSAB AB of Stockholm, Sweden, into its line of heavy-duty electric trucks, starting in the third quarter of 2022.

The steel, produced by SSAB, is reportedly made using a new technology based on hydrogen, significantly reducing its climate impact compared to conventionally-produced steel. The fossil-free steel will be initially used in the trucks’ frame rails, before being employed in other parts of the truck as it becomes more readily available.
