Ricardo demonstrates double-deck bus retrofitted with hydrogen fuel-cell system

Ricardo demonstration vehicle retrofitted with fuel-cell propulsion system

UK – A diesel double-deck bus which has been retrofitted with a hydrogen fuel-cell electric propulsion system by engineering consultancy firm Ricardo plc of Shoreham-by-Sea, UK is currently operating in a ten-week test and demonstration programme in two locations in England.

The demonstration vehicle is the result of a project part-funded by the ‘Hydrogen transport hub’, a UK Research and Innovation initiative (supported by the UK Department for Transport) which opened for applications in May 2021. Ricardo successfully worked with bus operator Stagecoach North East to electrify a diesel bus with a hydrogen fuel-cell system. The vehicle is now taking part in a demonstration which will put it into operation in the Tees Valley and in Brighton and Hove.
