UK Johnson Matthey Plc* (JM) of London, a specialist chemicals company which manufactures catalysts, pharmaceutical materials, and pollution control systems, has announced an GBP 80 million investment to expand part of its Royston site into a hydrogen fuel cell component gigafactory. The move forms part of JM’s strategy to scale up its hydrogen technologies business in response to rising global demand for clean mobility solutions, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector.

The Royston gigafactory will manufacture catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs), a core component in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which power hydrogen-electric vehicles. Once operational, the facility will produce up to 3GW of CCMs annually, with the potential to expand to 5GW. Construction will begin in late 2022, and the site is expected to be fully operational by mid-2024.
