Tata Motors wins ‘Grand Challenge’ tender to supply and operate 5,450 buses

India – Tata Motors Ltd of Mumbai has been awarded the ‘Grand Challenge’ contract to supply 5,450 electric buses to five major Indian cities of Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Surat by Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL)1 of New Delhi based on the lowest bid process. Subsequently, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has since placed the first order for the supply of 1,500 electric buses of the 5,450 buses, other STUs are expected to place orders soon.

Tata Motors are to supply the vehicles at a rate per kilometre operation over a 12 year period. The rate for a 12-metre bus is USD0.55/km (INR43.49/km), while the rate for a 9-metre bus is USD0.49/km (INR39.21/km).This rate includes the cost of electricity for charging of the buses. The contract is valued at USD625m.
