Sweden – Battery-electric trucks developed by Volvo Trucks Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden will be tested by Pajala-based mining company Kaunis Iron AB in its logistics operations in the Lapland region, starting next year.

Heavy electric trucks with a gross combination weight of 74 tons will be employed by Kaunis Iron to transport ore on a 160-kilometre route between Kaunisvaara and Pitkäjärvi in northern Sweden. Currently, thirty 90-ton truck-trailer combinations make the journey round the clock on diesel, but Kaunis Iron aims to entirely replace these with zero-emission vehicles by 2025, representing an investment of SEK0.5bn. If successful, the mining company claims it could reduce its annual CO2 emissions by 15,000 tons.
