VCS showcases next-generation lightweight ambulance

The next-generation Dual Crewed Ambulance by VCS

UK Vehicle Conversion Specialists Ltd (VCS), a subsidiary of the Woodall Nicholson Group based in Bradford, UK, unveiled its next-generation ‘Dual Crewed Ambulance’ (DCA), offering a lighter weight construction compared to previous iterations, at the Emergency Services Show, held between 21-22 September at the NEC in Birmingham.

The new DCA, based on a Fiat Ducato van conversion, features several design choices intended to improve vehicle efficiency by reducing weight. The interior cabinets, panelling, flooring, and windows, as well as the loading ramp, are all made of lighter materials. This has largely been achieved by the use of composite materials, which save on weight without compromising on strength. The electronics have also shed some weight, through simplifications in the system and the replacement of the vehicle battery by a lithium-ion pack. ACETECH of Tullamore, Ireland supplies the electronics and the connection to its fleet management platform for emergency services.
