UKWrightbus Ltd of Ballymena, UK has announced that it has contracted Hygen Energy Ltd, an Oxford-based hydrogen production firm led by Wrightbus owner and Chairman Jo Bamford, to build a hydrogen production facility at its headquarters.

The facility, which is subject to planning approval and is estimated to cost millions of pounds, will produce green hydrogen using electrolysis from renewable energy when it opens. Preparing the facility will mainly involve repurposing an old building adjacent to the main factory. Fuel generated at Ballymena will support Wrightbus customers, producing enough hydrogen per day to continuously power 300 of its fuel-cell electric buses, with scope to expand capacity further.
