BPW introduces the BPW LL self-steer axle compliant with new longer semi-trailer regulations for the UK

BPW's LL Self-Steer axle for LSTs

UK - BPW UK Ltd of Leicester, has introduced the BPW LL Self-Steering Axle to the UK market for semi-trailer manufacturers and fleet operators that meet new dimensions legislation that permits a longer semi-trailer length (LSTs) and truck-trailer combinations.  (May 31, 2023, saw the UK’s Department of Transport (DfT) introduce new legislation changes permitting longer semi-trailers (LSTs), with a maximum length of 18.55 metres, on roads in Great Britain, permitting an additional length of 2.05 metres compared with the standard size.

BPW explained that the axle beam and axle stub of its LL self-steering axle are connected to corrugated thrust bearings mounted under the kingpin assemblies and so, unlike conventional active and control steering axle designs do not require power-assisted steering control stabilisers from an external source. BPW said the LL self-steer is automatically controlled according to the load being carried, and because the design itself is simplified, the number of individual components required is low, saving weight, reducing installation costs as well as maintenance.
