Westport demonstrates hydrogen combustion in Sweden

Prototype hydrogen ICE truck in Sweden

Canada / Sweden – At the end of last year, Westport Fuel Systems Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada announced the successful completion of a vehicle demonstration in Sweden involving a hydrogen-fuelled truck powered by a combustion engine and Westport’s proprietary injection system.

The prototype truck in question hauled a full trailer in the Swedish town of Älmhult. It was installed with Westport’s ‘H2 HPDI’, a high-pressure direct injection system which allows an internal combustion engine to run on hydrogen. The truck was operated by KAJ Inrikes, a haulier for major furniture company Ikea. Other companies participating in the demonstration included: Smålandslogistik, a long distance haulier interested in decarbonising its fleet; Metacon AB, a supplier of electrolysers and reformers for producing hydrogen; and Hydri AB, a hydrogen infrastructure company.
