Volvo introduces new 780hp engine for FH16

The Volvo FH16 with 780hp engine

SwedenVolvo Trucks Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden has announced a new engine for the ‘FH16’ line of high-performance trucks, with a 780-horsepower rating which it claims is the “strongest engine in the industry”.

From the middle of this year, Volvo will start offering the FH16 with a new version of the ‘D17’, the 17-litre engine which it developed for Euro VI. At the highest rating, the D17 will offer maximum power of 780hp and torque of 3,800 Nm. At its core, the D17 design remains the same, with a single turbocharger and Volvo’s patented “wave” pistons. The new version boasts a new fuel injection system and improved engine braking. Altogether, the higher power and torque ratings and updated components “translate into faster engine response, better driveability, maximum productivity, and improved fuel efficiency”, according to Volvo.
