Wrightbus establishes bus retrofit division in Bicester

UK Wrightbus Ltd, a bus manufacturer based in Ballymena, UK, has announced a new division which will retrofit diesel buses in the middle of their life with electric powertrains – offered as a cheaper alternative to purchasing electric vehicles brand new.

The retrofit business, called ‘NewPower’, is based out of Bicester in Oxfordshire and currently employs twenty-two people. Wrightbus says that, in as little as three weeks, NewPower will take a mid-life diesel bus and convert it to zero emissions (battery or fuel cell). With space at the Bicester site to work on up to six buses at any one time, up to five hundred could be retrofitted in the span of a year.
