Mahle Powertrain expands hydrogen testing capabilities in Northampton

Test chamber for hydrogen vehicles at Mahle Powertrain facility in Northampton, UK

UK Mahle Powertrain Ltd, the British engineering subsidiary of German automotive components firm Mahle GmbH, has announced it is expanding its Northampton site with a new facility dedicated to hydrogen powertrain testing, supporting applications in the commercial vehicle, offroad, and marine sectors.

The new facility, which is already in use, incorporates a test chamber and engine dynamometers with nominal capacities of 900 kilowatts and 4,000 Nm. With space to hold two tube-trailers onsite with rapid switchover functionality between them, Mahle Powertrain says the testing facility will have a near-continuous supply of hydrogen. Potential gas escape from the site is monitored and handled by a system designed by Mahle Powertrain.
