Northvolt to cut back on cell production plans as EV uptake slows

Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden

SwedenNorthvolt AB, a battery cell producer based in Stockholm, Sweden, has announced that it will significantly scale back its business, shutting down existing sites and terminating planned projects in order to reduce costs and keep its main operations afloat.

The company stated it will ramp up the first phase of cell production at its main gigafactory in Skellefteå where it produces cell components for Scania, among other customers. Even at the ‘Northvolt Ett’ flagship site, however, Northvolt proposes to “streamline” its operations. It says it will place the cathode active material production facility into “care and maintenance” indefinitely in order to concentrate resources into ramping up cell production.
