TIP Group trialling “e-reefers” in Britain

Chereau trailer with BPW-TK e-axle for TIP trial

Netherlands / UKTIP Trailer Services, a trailer rental firm based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, has announced that it is trialling an electric regen axle system – developed jointly by Thermo King Europe and BPW – with a refrigerated semi-trailer in Britain.

The ‘ePower’ axle, produced by BPW, is installed on a reefer trailer manufactured by French company Chereau. Through Thermo King’s ‘Advancer AxlePower’ system, braking energy which is recovered by the e-axle is stored in a battery pack and then used to supply power to the trailer refrigeration unit. By putting this technology into operation with its customers, TIP aims to find out more about the benefits it may bring in terms of cost reduction and sustainability for multiple applications. Data from the trailer will be collected through TIP’s own telematics, including its brake performance monitoring system, ‘BrakePlus’.
