MoRTH announces use of new GPS-based toll system to speed up logistics on state highways

GPS-based toll collection system

India – The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released a new set of rules for the highway toll collection system under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024 to speed up logistics on state highways. The new setup uses a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to track vehicle movements. The new GNSS-based toll collection system is scheduled to be implemented by April 2025 – however, the practicality of this being achieved by the deadline is unlikely.

The new GNSS system modernizes toll payments on national highways by allowing vehicles to travel up to 20 kilometres toll-free. This excludes vehicles with a National Permit.
