APC-funded ‘Project Cavendish’ to convert diesel engines to run on hydrogen

UK – The British subsidiary of American fuel systems specialist Phinia Inc is the lead of a project funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre – a non-profit organisation which manages money contributed by the British government and the automotive industry – to develop components which can convert existing diesel engines to run on hydrogen.

The participants in ‘Project Cavendish’ will develop a hydrogen combustion concept for retrofitting existing diesel engine designs so that they can run on hydrogen. The aim of the project is to convert, rather than replace, current engines on the road, which would negate the need for “significant investment in supply chain manufacturing and assembly infrastructure”.
