Solomon Commercials teams up with University of Manchester to study aerodynamics of temperature-controlled vehicles

Simulated study of truck-trailer aerodynamics

UKSolomon Commercials Ltd, a manufacturer of refrigerated truck bodies and trailers based in Haslingden, UK, is partnering with the University of Manchester to measure the benefits of improved vehicle aerodynamics for temperature-controlled vehicles.

Solomon Commercials claims that vehicle aerodynamics, after the engine itself, are the biggest source of energy losses, accounting for 21% of overall fuel consumption. A temperature-controlled vehicle which covers an average of 130,000 kilometres per year spends a lot of time travelling at high speed, where 85% of the energy produced by the engine is used to overcome aerodynamic losses and rolling resistance.
