VWCO & EcoUrbis begin testing refuse collection trucks powered by Biomethane

VW Constallation BioMethane powered truck operated by EcoUrbis

Brazil - Launched at Fenatran 2024, the VW Constellation 26.280 Biomethane refuse collection truck has started trials on the streets of Sao Paulo with waste management company, EcoUrbis*, according to manufacturer, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus Ltda (VWCO) of Resende, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

VWCO said that it worked with EcoUrbis to develop a vehicle for waste and refuse collection. The Constellation Biomethane truck chassis is equipped with eight carbon steel tanks that have a storage capacity of 240 cubic meters (960 litres), which, VWCO claims, is the largest capacity in its segment, offering a range of up to 300 kilometres. The company also says that the use of biofuel has a positive and significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions, reducing carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions in the well-to-wheel cycle by more than 90%. (In a typical operation, in which the vehicle travels 50,000 to 70,000 kilometres per year, the equivalent reduction in CO2e emitted is 150 tons of CO2).
