Volvo to deploy buses with “City Brake” in London later this year

Transport for London's bus safety development manager poses in front of a Volvo BZL Electric

Sweden / UKVolvo Bus Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden has announced that it will deploy its first ever buses to be equipped with advanced emergency braking – modified to protect standing passengers from serious injury – in the city of London later this year.

Several ‘BZL Electric’ buses will be put on the road with ‘City Brake’, a braking system developed by Volvo specifically for urban buses. Though advanced emergency braking is standard in Volvo trucks and coaches, it was not installed in buses for fear of causing injury to passengers during a sudden braking event. The company has now developed a system which it says will mitigate the impact of emergency braking on standing and unrestrained passengers.
