UK – The British battery industry has taken a major step toward building its future workforce with the launch of a new Level 2 qualification designed to attract young people and retrain automotive workers for careers in the fast-growing EV battery sector. The initiative is being led by awarding organisation EAL in partnership with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre* (UKBIC) in Coventry. The qualification, open to learners aged 16 and above, will serve as an entry point into the battery industry, with higher-level programmes expected to follow later this year.

According to the UKBIC, the industry forecasts suggest that by 2040, the UK will require nearly 500,000 workers to support its battery ecosystem, including more than 170,000 in EV production, 35,000 in gigafactories, and around 65,000 in the wider supply chain. The qualification is intended to help fill this gap by equipping new entrants with the skills needed to populate EV production lines and support supply chain growth.
