Sweden / UKJohnson Matthey Plc (JM), the London-based specialist in catalysts and clean-air technologies, is investing in a dedicated hydrogen internal combustion engine (H₂ICE) testing facility at its existing Gothenburg site. The development marks a strategic step in strengthening JM’s hydrogen mobility business, with a particular focus on heavy-duty transport applications where electrification alone is not sufficient.

The decision to expand in Gothenburg reflects the growing demand for low-carbon solutions in the commercial vehicle sector and follows the success of Project Brunel, a collaboration with Cummins, PHINIA and Zircotec which concluded earlier this year. That programme delivered significant advances in hydrogen engine performance and durability, demonstrating the technology’s potential as a practical pathway to decarbonise long-haul and heavy-duty vehicles. JM’s new facility will allow the company to accelerate development by carrying out full-engine hydrogen combustion testing in-house, with a focus on catalyst performance within integrated aftertreatment and control systems.
