UK – First Bus has begun installing industrial-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across its depots to support the electrification of its fleet. The batteries will store electricity from the grid and renewable sources, allowing the operator to charge buses during peak demand without straining local infrastructure.
The first installation is at Glasgow Caledonia depot, already home to the UK’s largest on-site EV charging hub. The 13 MWh battery system there provides enough capacity to charge more than 200 zero-emission buses overnight. Additional depots in Aberdeen, Leicester, Norwich, and York are earmarked for rollout in 2025.
