USA / FinlandCummins Inc of Columbus, Indiana, USA is to supply electric drivetrains to specialist vehicle maker, Kalmar, a Helsinki-based division of Cargotec AB. The electric drivetrains are to be used in Kalmar's new generation electric terminal tractors currently being developed for use in the European market. ulie Furber, executive director – Electrified Power, Cummins, said: “By combining Kalmar’s next-generation terminal tractor platform with our lithium-ion battery expertise and experience in system integration, we will be able to deliver optimised electric powertrain solutions for port and distribution customers.”

Kalmar's electric terminal tractor is scheduled for introduction in 2020 and is to be equipped with a 107kWh lithium-ion battery capable of DC fast charge - allowing opportunity charging during shift breaks. To maintain battery life, a thermal management system maintains the optimal temperature, enabling the vehicle to operate in a range of climates. The Cummins driveline solution eliminates the need for a transmission on a terminal tractor, simplifying the overall system and reducing maintenance needs.
