‘Silent’ overnight hybrid Scania delivery trial underway in Stockholm

Sweden - A pilot study to test silent overnight deliveries has been launched at six McDonald’s restaurants in Stockholm. Scania AB of Södertälje has provided a hybrid-electric truck for the trial, which is being operated by logistics data analytics and services provider, HAVI.

Heavy vehicles are currently restricted from driving in Stockholm’s city centre at night due to noise, Scania explains. Consequently this means delivery access occurs when shops and restaurants are preparing for the start of the day’s business and most often during the morning rush hour. In a bid to minimise delivery trucks getting stuck in traffic, causing queues and congestion, and adding further to emissions pollution, Stockholm is now broadening a pilot study of overnight deliveries. The proposed trial is a co-operation between the City of Stockholm, HAVI, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, the EU, McDonald’s and Scania and is taking place under the framework of the EU project: Eccentric Stockholm.
