India – Commercial vehicle manufacturer, Ashok Leyland Ltd of Chennai, a Hinduja Group company, has announced it is looking at strategic new partnerships in order to develop a range of electric vehicles; this decision is not dissimilar to other global OEMs, which have realised the huge technology, practical and cost challenges associated with developing and building a range of commercially viable electric vehicles.
Ashok Leyland has already been working with battery and electro-mobility solutions specialist, Sun Mobility Solution India Pvt Ltd (SMS)1 of Bangalore in the development of its electric bus prototype, called Circuit S2, which operates using a battery swap system. (In the UK Ashok Leyland’s subsidiary, Optare Plc builds a number of electric bus models, which now includes a double deck bus).
