Cummins Inc of Columbus, Indiana, USA is to supply electric powertrains to Kalmar, part of Helsinki-based Cargotec, for its latest terminal tractor aimed at European markets.

Kalmar's new electric terminal tractor, scheduled for launch in 2020, is to be equipped with a 107kWh lithium-ion battery capable of DC fast charge - allowing operators to take advantage of opportunity charging during shift breaks. To maintain battery life, a thermal management system keeps it within the optimal temperature range, enabling the tractor unit to operate in a range of climates. The Cummins driveline solution eliminates need for a transmission on a terminal tractor, simplifying the overall system and reducing maintenance needs.
