Sweden - Scania has added a more powerful 540 hp version of its 13-litre diesel engine option to its range. The DC13 166 is claimed to provide a 2% fuel saving and is primarily intended for applications and customers where lots of power and drivability are in demand while weight sensitivity or limitations such as front-axle loads hinder the use of Scania’s slightly heavier V8 engines which start at 520 hp.

The new 540 iteration shares most of its technology with the existing 500 hp unit, using a robust fixed geometry turbo unit with ball bearings instead of journal bearings.  Alexander Vlaskamp, SVP,  remarked: “The improved fuel figures and the power versus weight ratio will make this engine an attractive choice for many Scania customers. 2700Nm torque from 1000 rpm allow for everything between fast gearing and low revs for excellent start-ability via hub reduction axles in forestry applications.”
