Sweden - Scania AB of Södertälje, has developed an autonomous self-driving driverless truck called AXL. While all Scania’s previous autonomous prototypes have featured conventional cabs to allow testing under the supervision of a human, the AXL is completely cab-less. Fitted with a tipper body, it is designed for use in closed and controlled environments, such as quarrying and on controlled enclosed construction sites. Scania's modular build concept remains at the heart of the development with the cab being replaced by a slim front module. The AXL currently features a conventional power unit running on renewable biofuel.

Scania says software is more important than hardware in autonomous vehicles. The AXL is steered and monitored by an intelligent control environment. In mines, for example, the autonomous operations are facilitated by a logistics system that tells the vehicle how it should perform.
