Bangkok to rent new buses instead of buying

Thailand - The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) in December 2019 said it was looking to cancel its THB20bn (USD625m) new bus purchase plan, as the country’s economy continued to slow sharply in the fourth quarter of the year.

The BMTA has announced that instead it has decided to extend the leases of its existing bus fleet, citing changing commuting patterns in Bangkok in favour of rail travel as the main reason. Its decision to cancel the purchases is subject to approval by the central government’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).
