Scania adds new Side Detection as safety option with latest heavy trucks

Sweden - Scania AB of Södertälje is introducing a side detection functionality via two different systems: Blind Spot Warning (BSW), which is mainly designed to warn truck drivers of hidden cars when at higher speeds on either side of the truck and, the Vulnerable Road User Collision Warning (VRUCW) system, which is designed to detect cyclist and motorbikes mainly on the passenger side of the truck. Together they help avoid or mitigate scenarios where trucks may encounter other road users. The two systems work in parallel and to some extent overlap each other, despite having different focuses. Radar, radar sensors and a camera are combined to detect pedestrians/cyclists and other vehicles in vulnerable positions.

Advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) support truck drivers by constantly monitoring blind spots beside the vehicle. In the UK, the most common incident is when a  truck turns left at a  junction while a cyclist tries to pass the truck on the  left side. With side detection functionality, if a cyclist (or a pedestrian) enters a risk zone near the truck, the system will alert the truck driver by visual and audible warnings in the cab.
