Japan - Toyota Motor Corporation of Tokyo, Japan and its truck-making subsidiary, Hino Motors Ltd of Hino-shi in March announced plans to jointly develop a fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck and to jointly push ahead with initiatives that will encourage the commercial adoption of hydrogen fuel-cell technologies, including verification tests and other initiatives.

Toyota and Hino jointly said they planned to be more proactive in helping to resolve global environmental issues and have announced ambitious goals to reduce CO2 emissions by 2050. Through the New Vehicle Zero CO2 Emissions Challenge launched in 2015, Toyota aims to cut average carbon dioxide emissions from its new vehicles by 90% compared with 2010 levels, while Hino target is to cut emissions by 90% compared to 2013 levels. Both companies see electric vehicle technologies as key to achieving these targets.
