Germany / SwitzerlandCovestro AG (formerly Bayer AG) of Leverkusen, Germany, a producer of industrial adhesives and plastics has developed a means to incorporate recycled CO2 as a substitute for oil-based polymers in manufacturing foam materials.

The material, known as Cardyon, is already adopted in mattresses, sports flooring underlay, furniture upholstery and textile fibres. Following a partnership with Swiss manufacturer, FoamPartner Group of Wolfhausen, Switzerland, it is now being used to produce automotive foams. Partly replacing fossil materials in the foam manufacturing process Cardyon reduces reliance on crude oil – benefiting the environment and promoting the circular economy.
