USA / Sweden - Volvo Group’s American subsidiary, Mack Trucks Inc of Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, is to commercialise the LR Electric, its dedicated refuse collection model equipped with a fully electric integrated Mack drivetrain. Orders for the Mack LR Electric will start in Q4 2020 with deliveries scheduled for the start of 2021.

Introduced as a prototype in 2018, the LR Electric features Mack’s fully integrated electric powertrain with twin AC electric motors generating 260kW (349hp) of continuous power and a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission sends power to Mack rear axles. Power is from four Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC lithium-ion) batteries providing up to 600V with fast-charging capabilities, provide vehicle propulsion, as well as power for all onboard accessories. A unique three-mode regenerative braking system accounts for the truck’s increasing load and helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops refuse trucks make per day.
