Indonesia - The market for heavy-duty trucks over 16 tons gvw was the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic last year, with international trade, fixed investment, mining sector output and construction activity all sharply lower. Heavy truck sales contracted by over 62% to 2,144 units in the fourth quarter of 2020 from already weak year-earlier sales of 5,703 units, resulting in a more than 69% drop in full-year sales to 7,497 units.

The segment is dominated by the Japanese brands, with Hino accounting for close to 60% of total industry volumes last year. Hino’s sales plunged by over 64% to 4,435 units after dropping by almost 37% to 12,510 units in 2019, while Mitsubishi-Fuso posted an even sharper decline, of over 76% to 1,019 units.
