Cummins unveils new coach engines and electric bus architecture at Busworld

USA / Belgium - Cummins Inc of Columbus, Indiana, USA used Busworld last month to introduce the X12 engine with up to 480hp (360kW) output for powering full size touring and intercity 12-to-15m coaches. Certified to Phase-D stage of Euro VI regulations, the X12 incorporates innovative architecture and a highly efficient in-cylinder combustion formula eliminating the need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

Other advanced design features include techniques to minimize friction losses throughout the engine, including the water pump, gear train, lube system and power cylinder and a sculptured engine block together with use of high-strength composite materials for the oil pan and valve cover offers substantial weight savings – the 11.8-litre engine weighs just under 920kg resulting in significant fuel-savings.
